YAP IN BREAKOUT GAME AS SMC-PILIPINAS DRUBS IRAN
TAIPEI - THE Filipinos played with their hearts on their sleeves and their minds in Japan as San Miguel-Team Pilipinas clobbered Iran, 89-79, in the 29th William Jones Cup Basketball Tournament at the Hsinchuang Stadium here Saturday.
After trailing, 19-24, in the first quarter, the Filipinos bucked the height disadvantage and came ablaze from beyond the three-point arc with Mark Caguioa and Kelly Williams delivering the initial blows, before James Yap took over and displayed his A-game.
From a 38-32 Iran advantage with 6:05 remaining in the second period, Yap fired six points and Jimmy Alapag scored five in an 11-2 run that pushed San Miguel-Team Pilipinas on top, 43-40.
Aldin Bahrami and Mosa Nabipoor struck for back-to-back baskets, giving Iran its last taste of the lead at 44-43 before Yap drilled in a triple to key a 7-2 windup by the Nationals for a 51-46 edge at the halftime break.
"Going into this game, I told my boys to think that we are already in Japan and this is a game that would push us into the quarterfinals of the FIBA-Asia tournament. They responded and I'm happy for that," said national coach Chot Reyes.
"There were also a lot of revelations tonight. James Yap is one," added Reyes.
Yap, one of four new players inserted into the RP squad, finished with 18 points to go with his four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Yap, Alapag and Gabe Norwood conspired for a 10-0 blast spanning the end of the third period and the start of the fourth to give SMC-RP its biggest spread, 76-62, 7:58 remaining in the contest.
It was the third victory in six games for the Filipinos, tying them with their victims, Lebanon, Korea and Qatar.
Jordan remained on top of the heap with a 5-1 card after sending Lebanon tumbling to its third straight setback, 72-68. Defending champion Athletes In Action of the United States and host Chinese-Taipei are tied for second at 4-2 after hurdling separate opponents. The Americans beat Kazakhstan, 92-78, while the Taiwanese beat Qatar, 75-70. Korea mangled Japan, 102-58, in the other match. (BP)

Nationals spank Iranians
James Yap, the most famous of the Filipinos here, did not disappoint a big Philippine crowd of mostly overseas workers, as he banged in 18 points to lead the Nationals to their third win in six starts in the 10-team tournament.
Yap, who was silent in all of the Nationals’ three losses, shook Iran’s tall foundation with his rainbow shots as the Filipinos proved they can win against teams in their bracket, the "Group of Death," in the coming FIBA-Asia Championship in Tokushima, Japan, the Olympic qualifier.
It was a big lift for the Filipinos who bowed to the Jordanians, 70-74, the other day. Jordan and China are the other squads in the Filipinos’ group in the FIBA-Asia Championship.
"I asked them to show me the real thing, and they gave me a real win," National coach Chot Reyes said.
"Coming into this game, I told them to treat this match as if we were playing in Tokushima already. They responded well."
The Philippines now shares fourth spot with Iran and Lebanon, while Jordan remained on top with a 5-1 card, followed by defending champion Athletes in Action of the USA (4-2) and Qatar (3-2), which was still playing Taiwan at presstime.
The Philippines had some shaky moments at the start and even trailed Iran until early in the second quarter before Yap unloaded 11 points, punctuated by a trey, to turn things around for the Philippines, which took the half, 51-46.
The Philippines never looked back from there although Iran tried its best to counter each and every shot the Filipinos would throw its way.
The Iranians last threatened at 54-55 on successive baskets by Aidin Nikkah Bahrami but Kelly Williams was there, turning garbage into golds, including a slam on a putback of a Mark Caguioa miss.
The Nationals coasted along from there while the Iranians complained and grumbled at everything which the Filipinos took as an early sign of surrender.
The Nationals used the fourth quarter to show-off, with Yap connecting on two more treys, and Jimmy Alapag, Gabriel Norwood and Caguioa coming through with one each.
Meanwhile, Jordan creamed Lebanon, 72-68, to stay on top with its fifth win in six games.
The Lebanese, conquerors of the Philippines, 65-62, last Tuesday, dropped to 3-3.
The Athletes in Action trounced Kazakhstan, 92-68, to improve its slate to four triumphs in six games while dropping its victim to 1-5, the only positive light in its slate coming from a 96-61 rout of Japan last Tuesday.

JORDAN DEALS SMC-RP “GOOD LOSS”
TAIPEI - JORDAN may have posted a 74-70 win over San Miguel-Team Pilipinas Friday, but national coach Chot Reyes feels like chuckling deep inside.
With the loss, its third in five outings, the Filipinos may have difficulty in targetting the championship of the 29th William Jones Cup played at the Hsinchuang Gym here. But Reyes said, "If there's such a thing as a good loss, I think this is it."
For one, coming off a hard-earned win over Korea last Thursday, the Filipinos started the game against Jordan on a sluggish note, allowing Jordan to jump to a 7-0 lead with Ayman Idais knocking in a pair of free throws and Zaik Albas scoring five points that included a triple.
"Itinago ng Jordan si Idais against the United States. Pinagpahinga din nila yung si Jamal Almaaytah," said Reyes."Pero sa atin, inilabas nila ang dalawang iyon."
While Jordan wet full throttle,Reyes still managed to hold some punches, reserving the likes of RenRen Ritualo, Nino Canaleta and Ranidel de Ocampo.
For most of the way, Reyes opted to go small, with combinations featuring the likes of Jayjay Helterbrand, Mark Caguioa and Dondon Hontiveros along with two big men against Jordan which has an average height of 6-6 1/2.
Jordan, which seized solo lead with a lofty 4-1 record, enjoyed its biggest spread at halftime, 38-26.
Mark Caguioa fired 11 points in the third quarter and Kelly Williams added five as San Miguel-Team Pilipinas chopped down the Jordan lead to 53-48.
The Nationals clamped down on defense and came to within two points thrice, the last at 70-68 on a triple by Gabe Norwood, 1:31 to go.
"I like the attitude displayed by my boys and I'm satisfied. We came to within two free throws of tying the score," said Reyes, pointing out flubbed charities by Kerby Raymundo off Alkbas with 1:03 remaining.
After that, Enver Zoobzokov scored on a jumper and naturalized Jordanian Rasheim Wright canned two free throws to seal the victory.
"I'll take this loss anytime. At least, alam natin na kaya nating manalo sa kanila sa Tokushima,"said Reyes.
Despite the victory, Jordan coach Mario Palma says he is still wary of his team's chances against the Filipinos in the FIBA-Asia Men's Championship in Tokushima, Japan late this month.
"Jordan might be the best team at the moment here in the Jones Cup but the Philippines is a tough squad and the better team will win in Japan," said Palma.
Jordan is one of two teams playing in the Jones Cup that is in the same bracket as the Philippines in the FIBA-Asia joust. The other is Iran which San Miguel-Team Pilipinas meets at 3:30 pm Saturday.
In the other matches Friday, defending champion Athletes In Action sent Lebanon reeling to its second straight setback, 81-70, while Qatar handed Japan its fourth loss in five outings via an 86-68 rout. (BP)
NOTES: Asi Taulava gulped four bottles of energy drink in preparing himself for his battle against 7-foot-4 Korean behemoth Ha Seung-Jin. He went on to match up well with the former Portland Trailblazer as he logged seven points and the same number of rebounds. He made three clutch free throws, helping the team seal the morale-boosting 88-84 win. The problem for Taulava was that he was still hyper long after the match was over…….. RP team manager Robert Non arrived Friday in time for the RP-Jordan tiff. He just followed the team as, among others, he had to attend the PBA Board of Governors meeting Wednesday. Non said Harbour Centre was given up to July 31 to decide whether or not it’s joining the pro league next season......... The Jordanian coach believes the RP team is in much better shape, saying they have just trained with a complete lineup. "We started training just about the same time as the Philippines. But we're training with only seven to eight players," said coach Mario Palma.
The scores:
JORDAN 74 - Almaayta 18, Idais 15, Daghles 9,Alkhas 8, Wright 8, Abbas 6, Sobzoko 5, Al-Sous 3, Abbas 2, Anajjar 0.
SMC-RP 70 - Caguioa 25,Alapag 17, Raymundo 8, Norwood 5, Wiliams 5, Hontiveros 4, Helterbrand 4, Taulava 2, Pennisi 0, Yap 0, Menk 0.
Quarters: 14-9; 38-26; 53-48; 74-70.
