Impressive win over tall FIBA-Asia tourney groupmate Saturday, 07 July 2007

TAIPEI - THE Filipinos played with their hearts on their sleeves and their minds in Japan as San Miguel-Team Pilipinas clobbered Iran, 89-79, in the 29th William Jones Cup Basketball Tournament at the Hsinchuang Stadium here Saturday.

After trailing, 19-24, in the first quarter, the Filipinos bucked the height disadvantage and came ablaze from beyond the three-point arc with Mark Caguioa and Kelly Williams delivering the initial blows, before James Yap took over and displayed his A-game.

From a 38-32 Iran advantage with 6:05 remaining in the second period, Yap fired six points and Jimmy Alapag scored five in an 11-2 run that pushed San Miguel-Team Pilipinas on top, 43-40.

Aldin Bahrami and Mosa Nabipoor struck for back-to-back baskets, giving Iran its last taste of the lead at 44-43 before Yap drilled in a triple to key a 7-2 windup by the Nationals for a 51-46 edge at the halftime break.

"Going into this game, I told my boys to think that we are already in Japan and this is a game that would push us into the quarterfinals of the FIBA-Asia tournament. They responded and I'm happy for that," said national coach Chot Reyes.
